What is medical radiology?

Definition

Medical radiology

Medical radiology is the branch of medicine that uses imaging techniques — sound waves, X-rays, magnetic fields and computed tomography — to look inside the body without surgery, helping physicians diagnose and monitor disease.

Each modality has its own strengths. At Optima Diagnostics in Silchar we focus on the two most commonly requested outpatient modalities — ultrasound and digital X-ray — performed to a high standard.

  • Ultrasound uses sound waves; safe, radiation-free, ideal for soft tissues and pregnancy.
  • Digital X-ray uses small, controlled doses of ionising radiation; ideal for bones, the chest and the abdomen.
  • Advanced modalities (CT, MRI, PET-CT) are coordinated through partner imaging centres when clinically required.

FAQ

Common questions about our radiology services

Do I need a doctor's prescription for an ultrasound?

Yes. Indian regulations require ultrasound studies to be performed against a valid prescription from a registered medical practitioner. Please bring the original prescription on the day of the scan.

Will I be told my findings on the spot?

The sonographer or radiographer performs the scan; the consultant radiologist writes the formal report. Clinical interpretation should be discussed with your treating doctor based on the signed report.

Is sex determination performed at Optima Diagnostics?

No. We strictly comply with the PC-PNDT Act. Sex determination is illegal in India and is not performed at our centre under any circumstances. Form F documentation is mandatory for every obstetric ultrasound and is meticulously maintained.

How long does an imaging report take?
  • Routine ultrasound & X-ray: 2-4 hours.
  • Obstetric anomaly scan: 4-6 hours (multiple cine clips and measurements reviewed).
  • Doppler studies: 4-6 hours.
Can I bring my child for an X-ray or ultrasound?

Yes. Paediatric imaging is performed with reduced-dose protocols, child-friendly positioning, and a parent or guardian present throughout. Please carry the child's previous records.
